By Philippe Weisbecker
Oxymores brings together 16 diptychs recently created by Philippe Weisbecker. Drawings with abstract or sometimes identifiable forms, painted with precision or thrown on the paper, presented opposite each other, in a play of masses and colours which pushes even further the purity towards which the artist constantly strives. His work is a search for the essence of the subjects he draws: his line reduces the form to its obviousness, the representation is almost schematic. Yet this simplicity vibrates and, far from being cold and distant, his gaze is, on the contrary, as close as possible to the objects represented. One perceives an attention, a humility, and a pleasure in honestly retranscribing the most ordinary reality, that of one’s kitchen, anonymous streets or the shelves of the local hardware store.
